術語吞噬作用是希臘措辭 「phagein」含義吃的被形成的表單， 「kytos」或意味進程的細胞和 「osis」。 吞噬作用是用於的這個用語描述吞噬和毀壞有缺陷或微生物細胞。
巨噬細胞的另一個功能將警告免疫系統對微生物入侵。 在咽下微生物以後，巨噬細胞存在其稱抗原的細胞表面的蛋白質，發信號抗原出現對一個對應的 T 協助細胞。
